I spent ten years writing reviews for the Manchester based website, Silent Radio and the buzz from going to gigs and saying ‘I’m on the list’ has never worn off. Here are some of my reviews:
Album Review: Sir Was- Holding On to a Dream.
Febuary 2020
Sir Was is a Swedish artist and will be supporting another great Swedish export, Little Dragon at the Brixton Academy in September 2020. Hopefully that is a date that will be staying in the diary.
Album Review: Ghostpoet. Dark Days and Canapes.
August 2017
Obaro Ejimiwe, better known as Ghostpoet had me with his third release Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam and I love the song Us Against Whatever.
This is is a review of his fourth album, Dark Days and Canapes, which is dark but, too incisive to be miserable.
Live Review: Lamb. Manchester Cathedral.
October 2017
A bit of a mean review of poor old Lamb. I loved Best Kept Secrets when it first came out in 1996 (?) and this is a live review of them performing at the Manchester Cathedral 21 years later!
Live Review: Savages. Albert Hall.
Febuary 2016
Brooding and dressed all in black, Savages are the real deal. They were touring the bands second album, Adore Life and their style certainly suited the cavernous, grand interior of the Albert Hall.
Album Review: The Flaming Lips. The Terror.
April 2013
This is a review that makes me wince a bit because I wasn’t very nice but you can’t like everything can you? I know Flaming Lips are well liked so I wanted to be on board with it but thought it was pretty self indulgent.
Live Review: Beth Jean Hughton. Deaf Institute.
October 2011
This is one of those gigs where I prefered the support act to the main act. The support act were Stealing Sheep and I went to see them at YES at the beginning of last year and they are a lot less folky than they were nine years back. Nine years?! Wow. I definitely can’t believe it was that long ago!
Live Review: Toddla T. Manchester Roadhouse.
2011
One of the first reviews I ever wrote. I spent so much time writing it, but, it’s one of the reviews I’m most proud of. His set reminded me that I really do like Garage music and, as I was told by a Silent Radio reader, Flowers is by Sweet Female Attitude NOT Mystique. Poor research skillz, soz.
